Accurately Aligning A Vice on a Mill

Ensure that the vice retaining bolts have been slackened, Mount your dial gauge in the drill chuck, set the direction of tip travel.

Zero the dial gauge then wind the table along till the dial gauge reaches the farthest travel of the chuck, if there is and deviation use a soft face hammer to tap the vice in the appropriate direction. Repeat until you have the desired result.

I tend to have one vice bolt tighter than the other, so that the vice swivels rather than moves bodily, makes it easier to adjust.

Double check once you have tightened the vice bolts.

Always perform this function on the fixed jaw of the vice.

For accurate work I do try and get the run to be less than 1 thou, 5 to 10 thou is fine for run of the mill stuff.
